Depending on how often you cook, we recommend sorting through your spice cabinet at least twice a year. Did you know that the shelf life of spices is approximately 2-3 years depending on the spice? You can tell if your spices are too old by rubbing them together. If they are no longer full and fragrant, it’s time to toss them in the garbage. Although expired spices will not make you sick they most certainly will not have the desired effect in your dishes. And bright colored spices will appear faded when too old; then it’s time to replace them as well.
A messy spice storage space can become dirty rather quickly. It can also be exceedingly annoying when you can’t find what you are looking for while in the midst of preparing a meal. Here are a few ideas to assist you in organizing your spices; systems that are functional and look great too!
1. Two Tier- Spice Drawers
Organize your spices facing upwards so you can read the labels and grab what you need quickly. Having two levels should be more than enough to cover it.
2. DIY Racks
You can make your own racks by using curtain rods. Need some help! Check out this video we found that we think you will love. DIY spice rack
3. Hanging Storage Rack
Make more space in your kitchen by installing a hanging storage rack. We love this one from Etsy!
4. Multiple Tiered Spice Rack
Turn all labels to face you so you can find quickly. This is a great compact way to find what you need. Make sure to place your favourite spices in the front. We found this one on ebay.
5. Cabinet Door Spice Rack
To save space, try a door-mounted spice storage rack inside a kitchen cabinet. And not only will it keep your spices safe from heat and humidity, but it keeps shelves free for your canned goods and boxes.
6. Revolving Spice Rack
We love the revolving spice rack. A great way to organize and fun to spin around.
